Anthracite fields is a piece created by Pulitzer Prize winner Julia Wolfe, co-founder of Bang on a Can All-Stars. Drawing on oral histories, interviews, speeches, geographic descriptions, children’s rhymes, and coal advertisements the creator composed a work that gives an intimate look at coal-miners’ life around the turn of the 20th century. By combining instruments and voices as well as sound and imagery she creates a composition of musical historic poetry with folk and classical elements.
