Ellen Reid, Soundwalk
This year’s SNF Nostos welcomes Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and sound artist Ellen Reid and transforms the Stavros Niarchos Park at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) into a soundscape, offering visitors a unique participatory experience.
The ever-resourceful Ellen Reid is one of the most innovative artists of her generation, with a wide body of work ranging from opera to film scores and from pop to chamber music. In the midst of the pandemic, she created Soundwalk, an app-based and GPS-enabled work of public art that uses music to illuminate the natural environment.
The path that each listener chooses determines the music that will accompany them, and each of their movements within SNFCC activates a different musical experience.
According to the artist, Soundwalk is a “gift,” a shape-lifting musical experience mapped onto a location, which functions as a “break from reality,” under the conditions of social distancing. Her hope is to “inspire us and make us feel connected to something bigger than ourselves.”
Soundwalk is available to anyone with a smartphone and works through a special app, which visitors can download here: https://www.ellenreidsoundwalk.com/download
The Stavros Niarchos Park soundwalk with be available during SNF Nostos.
Details of the program are likely to change in accordance with the latest COVID-19 health measures.
