Prior to becoming a physician, Dr. Lowenthal graduated from Yale Law School and worked as a corporate lawyer in New York City. He switched career paths, attending medical school at Columbia University, where he went on to complete his residency in Psychiatry. Dr. Lowenthal held various positions at New York State Psychiatric Institute prior to becoming the Clinical Director at NYSPI in 2008. In 2017, Dr. Lowenthal stepped down from his administrative responsibilities to join the Center for Practice Innovations as its Medical Director. He has been a member of the New York Presbyterian-Columbia Ethics Committee for over 20 years and teaches ethics to the psychiatry residents and forensic psychiatry fellows.
