Fiorenzo (Fio) Omenetto’s research interests are at the convergence of sustainability, technology, naturally derived and biologically inspired materials, art, and design to generate “living” materials for transformative applications in materials science and global health. He has proposed and pioneered the use of silk as a material platform for advanced technology, and has licensed and spun out several ventures with social impact from the laboratory among which delivery of drugs without refrigeration and reduction of food waste.
Prof. Omenetto is a recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship, a Tällberg Global Leader, and is a Fellow of Optica (formerly Optical Society of America), the National Academy of Inventors, and of the American Physical Society. His research has been featured extensively in the press with coverage in the most important media outlets worldwide.
