Lilian Athanasopoulou studied at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki’s Medical School, specializing in child and adolescent psychiatry, which she has been practicing continuously since 1994. She trained in various types of psychotherapy (family, psychodynamic, drama therapy), keeping psychodynamic understanding and a systemic approach at the core of her clinical thinking and work.
Early in her career, Athanasopoulou worked as a private child psychiatrist, and since 2001 she has been with Greece’s National Psychiatric Service. In May 2022, she was named Coordinating Director of the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at George Papanikolaou General Hospital of Thessaloniki.
Athanasopoulou takes part in and helps organize a variety of educational programs and seminars. Particular areas of interest include: prevention in all areas of child development and raising awareness in schools and communities, adolescence, addictive behaviors (for which she coordinates the relevant clinic in her department), neglect and abuse, forensic child psychiatry (for which she has prepared a significant number of expert reports in serious cases), learning difficulties, ADHD, and stuttering. She also has a particular interest in developmental disorders, co-coordinating an Early Childhood Developmental Disorders Clinic
She is married and has two sons, ages 30 and 32.
