Let’s start with the basics: a summer without concerts is no summer at all. At the Stavros Niarchos Foundation’s (SNF) Summer Nostos Festival RetroFuture Edition, we have a full lineup of proof that summer is indeed here. Leading Greek and international singers, DJs, and bands will take the (online) stage of the SNFestival to sweep us away with music. No matter how far apart we are from each other, we’ll still be singing along together, dancing together, and experiencing the magic of the moment together.

This year, at the SNFestival RetroFuture Edition, you’ll have the opportunity to experience online music premieres by beloved artists as well as up-and-comers. Don’t miss Nigerian superstar Burna Boy for a brief but intense taste of Afro-fusion and the excellent DJ Decay, who will energize you with the rhythms of a rising music scene in Uganda while celebrating the power of the femme. Experience a magical night with a live performance of Dimitris Kamarotos’s musical work Suspended, with mezzo-soprano Anna Pangalou, which will be broadcast live from the highest point of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC), somewhere between the sky and the earth. Sing along with your favorite songs from the band ΜΕΛΙSSES at another online concert on top of the SNFCC energy canopy, an elevated concert guaranteed to elevate your mood. Make room in your kitchen, on your balcony, or in your garden, because with this year’s DJ sets—once again in collaboration with the Nyege Nyege Festival—will have you tearing up the dance floor!

Some musical throwbacks in this year’s program put the retro in RetroFuture. We hit rewind to (re)live unforgettable concerts, like the performance by iconic Greek electronic duo Stereo Nova (2018) which filled the SNFCC’s Great Lawn with 11,000 people and the concert by the band Low (2019), whose performance stood out for the indelible interplay of their voices and their intense spirituality. Travel back in time for one of the most emotional moments in the festival’s history, with Seu Jorge & the Athens State Orchestra (2018) performing David Bowie’s greatest hits in Portuguese. Watch parts of the magical performance Dance of the Cranes (2014), when the SNFCC was just a construction site, complemented by plantings of olive trees and lavender.

The SNFestival RetroFuture Edition would not be complete without one of the festival’s all-time favorite acts, the musical show by Choir! Choir! Choir!, who will premiere online the crowdsourced choral video of festivalgoers singing With a Little Help from My Friends by the Beatles, along with the show’s two Canadian creators and Kostis Maraveyas.

While this SNFestival RetroFuture Edition is far from normal and far from what we experienced in the past, its essence remains the same. It’s about enjoying the artists we love and getting to know new ones. It’s also about music bringing us a bit closer together, even when we are physically apart.
