Ioannis Topalidis was born on November 24, 1962 in Mavrodendri, Kozani. During his teenage years, he found himself in Germany with his family, where he began his football career as a creative half, mainly playing in Third Division teams.
When he stopped playing football, he was involved in coaching and attended the Mainz School and then the Cologne School. He worked in low division clubs and in 1998 he was recruited as a talent scout by Hertha Berlin. In 2001 he was recruited in the Greek national team as an assistant coach. He celebrated winning the European Championship, along with head coach Otto Rehhagel, in Portugal at Euro 2004.
In June 2010, he announced his retirement from the Greek national team.
He is married, with three children, and lives in Germany.
