Kafeneio tou Gianni: Late night at the Kafeneio | Humans vs AI: Revolution or Coexistence?
Maybe it’s the coffee talking, or maybe it’s the fact that our phones are finally out of earshot, but there’s something about the tech-free Kafeneio tou Gianni that makes us feel we can finally speak freely about that nagging question we’ve had on our minds: are we humans going to be okay?
Former US Congressman John Sarbanes is leading informed but informal conversations on whether and how humans can carve out a place for ourselves in the emerging AI-saturated world order.
On Wednesday, June 24, he’ll be joined by Columbia historian Mark Mazower, Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) Director of the University’s Institute for Ideas and Imagination, who will help situate our current techno-social ferment in the broader arc of history, and bioethicist Effy Vayena, a professor at ETH Zurich and co-director of the Stavros Niarchos Bioethics Academy, who will use ethical frameworks to punch through the froth and stand us on solid ground. Together, they’ll discuss which approach to AI offers the best hope for humanity.
