Civic tech activist
Rose Njeri Tunguru is a Kenyan civic tech activist. She gained prominence in May 2025 after heavily armed police raided her apartment and detained her after she developed a platform that enabled citizens to send emails to their elected representatives to voice their opposition to a controversial tax bill. After her release, she launched the Surveillance and Accountability Project, a research lab focused on defending Kenya’s digital democracy from President William Ruto’s regime’s rising authoritarianism. In 2025, she appeared on Time Magazine's annual list of 100 emerging leaders.
