Reimagined threads: Crafting abayomi dolls from upcycled textiles
This workshop welcomes participants of all ages to engage in the culturally rich tradition of Abayomi doll-making. Rooted in African and Afro-Brazilian history, this no-sew practice offers an accessible and meaningful creative experience for diverse communities. The tactile process supports grounding and a sense of personal agency, while the act of shaping and caring for a figure encourages storytelling and relational expression. All textiles used will be repurposed, highlighting the importance of both creativity and sustainability in participatory arts and health interventions.
Facilitated by Creative Arts Therapist Sheila Fontanive and Brazilian multidisciplinary artist and Creative Center Artist-in-Residence Cibele Vieira, the session provides a thoughtful and inclusive environment for participants to create together and explore creativity as a pathway to well-being. Attendees will leave with a handmade doll and an appreciation for a tradition that continues to inspire resilience and cultural connection across generations and communities.
