Dr. Myrianthefs’s talk will focus on the global shortage of nursing personnel, the growing phenomenon of nursing burnout and the urgent need to strengthen the nursing workforce through improved working conditions and increased staffing positions.

He will comment on recent Greek data on nursing burnout, “quiet quitting,” and the perspectives of Greek academic staff regarding barriers to nursing practice in Greece. In addition, he will explore Greek societal perceptions of the nursing profession. Particular emphasis will be placed on local challenges including the migration of nurses (“brain drain” or “nursing drain”) to other European countries and the understaffing of school nursing services.

He will also talk about initiatives undertaken by the Department of Nursing at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which, acknowledging these critical challenges, has undertaken a leading role in addressing barriers to nursing practice in Greece. This includes submitting policy recommendations to relevant ministries, public interventions, organizing scientific conferences to promote dialogue and develop realistic solutions and engaging with society and secondary schools to enhance the visibility and recognition of the nursing profession.
