A new kind of hospital, shaped by international collaboration

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) has taken the lead on building three new state-of-the-art public hospitals across Greece, but from start to finish, the process has been a collaborative one. The medical professionals who will use the Renzo Piano Building Workshop-designed hospitals have been extensively consulted, as have the communities at large of Komotini, Sparta, and Thessaloniki, the three cities where they are currently under construction.

Upon completion, the hospitals will be handed over to the Greek state to become part of the country’s national health system, and the Hellenic Ministry of Health has been an indispensable partner from the get-go in an initiative meant to complement, not replace, state efforts.

Other partners from leading medical institutions and universities around the world are contributing expertise in areas including pediatric and adult cancer, bioethics, exercise, and pediatric cardiology to help ensure that the hospitals’ clinical programs reflect the latest state of care and international best practices. The aim, through cross-institutional collaboration, is to deliver the best possible human-centered care.

Representatives from some of these collaborating institutions will join Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) Co-President Andreas Dracopoulos for a discussion of how, specifically, working together across disciplines, across borders, and across the public and private sectors can improve outcomes for patients, health care providers, and society as a whole.
